HBA Global Expo Features Master Class on Lipstick

HBA Global Expo, the leading beauty and product development event, will present a master class on “Anatomy of Lipstick” as part of its comprehensive educational program. Taking place Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. this in-depth tutorial will cover the entire process of developing a successful lipstick formula and shade range for increased customer satisfaction, from a marketing point of view. The 10th Annual HBA takes place October 14-16, 2002 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.

“Anatomy of a Lipstick” will be taught by renowned industry consultants, Suzanne Grayson and Craig Arpino, director of research & development at Kolmar. The 3-hour tutorial will provide a retrospect of trends, shade preferences, ingredients as well as discuss the manufacturing process and costs between a lipstick from the 1970s through today.

The Master Class will then drill down into the importance of formula development in meeting consumer needs. Attendees will learn how to evaluate lipstick preferences among diverse age groups and demographics, and will become familiar with textural terms used in formula development. In addition, attendees will be able to sample different product textures and formulas and be able to direct R&D to create and modify formulas.

“Anatomy of Lipstick” will hone in on shading strategy based on target market, distribution channels, competition and other variables. Best-selling shade ranges for all age groups will be discussed and particular emphasis will be placed on L’Oreal’s Endless lipstick shade range.

Finally, how shade promotions are developed along with an analysis of Fall 2002 promotions will be part of this Market Class on lipstick. A sneak peak at Spring 2003 shade trends will conclude this in-depth presentation.

Pre-registration for this Master Class is required as this session is limited to 100 participants. Other Master Classes that will be presented at HBA include: The Building Blocks of Perfumery; Creating a Great Fragrance; and Controlled Release Systems for Cosmetics and Personal Care. In addition to these tutorials, Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estee Lauder Companies Inc., will deliver a general session, open to all attendees, entitled: “A View from the Top: The Next Five Years,” on Monday, October 14th at 9:00 a.m.

The HBA Educational Program will also be comprised of two conference tracks – Marketing and Product Development. The Marketing Conference will cover a wide array of general topics important to its core audience, as well as more focused sessions on point of purchase, Internet and packaging.

The Product Development Conference, entitled “The Practical Application of Technology,” will present in-depth sessions on the latest trends in skin care, cosmetics, hair care, fragrance, personal products, aromatherapy and laboratory equipment. In addition, the most exciting advances in R&D will be presented at this important conference.
